4 Modern Updates On Your Favourite Wardrobe Basics

different ways to wear denim

Non-boring basics.

If there’s one thing we love more around here than chronically overplaying Drake, it’s a good wardrobe basic. As a well-stocked spice rack is to any successful kitchen, investing in the right basics is crucial to building a harmonious wardrobe that makes sense. Sure, our closets are increasingly resembling an African safari, what with all the animal print purchases we’ve made recently, and our ankles are finally getting the recognition they deserve with an assortment of shell anklets on high rotation, but this does not negate the need for some sturdy foundations. Trying to throw together a look without the aid of a great basic is like trying to bake a cake without an oven (last food analogy I swear).

There’s only so many white cotton t-shirts a girl can justify buying (personally, I’ve got upwards of five), though. Enter the four updates on the classic wardrobe staples below. These slight amendments will inject the fun back into getting dressed, but are still understated enough to be worn on repeat, and to allow for your more ~daring~ wardrobe pieces to sing at the top of their lungs.

One-shouldered tops

My love affair with one-shouldered tops can be traced all the way back to one of the greatest Kath & Kim moments of all time. Let me set the scene: Kath opts for a ~classy~ metallic one-shouldered top for her hens do, and decides to save some cash by only fake tanning the arm on display (resourceful!), only to realise that she’s done the wrong arm. Argh, hate when that happens! Kim suggests turning the top around the other way, ultimately saving the day and beginning my starry-eyed obsession with this 90s top.

Lately, this idée fixe has been reignited, thanks to the smorgasboard of one-shouldered tops on offer. Who would have thought setting a shoulder free could look so good? See below for #1 of your new favourite non-boring basics…

Our picks: This Par Femme long-sleeve one-shouldered top for everyday wear (it’d be rude not to grab yourself the singlet version while you’re at it), this black Helmut Lang puppy for an understated nighttime lewk, this Cushnie Et Ochs white cut-out one-shouldered top for when you’re feeling extra sassy,

Patchwork denim

There’s been a patchwork-shaped hole in my heart since the dawn of the 90s, a time when my Nan’s impeccable quilting skillz featured heavily in my life. (Can you tell I’m feeling a bit nostalgic today?). Luckily, patchwork denim has emerged as one of the key trends in the COH ‘Modern Updates To Classic Wardrobe Basics’ Hall of Fame. Fill your own patchwork void below (or do as Carmen has done and add a cute patch to your butt).

Our picks: These RAG & BONE patchwork jeans are hereby my butt’s new best friend for reasons of being: fun, flattering and functional, but these Alexander McQueen patchies have got my heart skipping a beat.

Our picks: This exceedingly affordable ruched slip dress from THE ICONIC will see you through the silly season, and this Reformation ruched knit singlet (which comes in both cream and black) will be your most-worn top this season, promise.

Love you long time, classic black trousers. But, as the saying goes, if you love something, you should give it room to breathe by making way for another pair of pants in your wardrobe. Or, something like that. Enter the khaki trouser which will: ensure you look like a chic member of the The Wild Thornberrys fam, and go swimmingly with your new one-shouldered top!

Our picks: These Tela capri pants are what my khaki dreams are made of, as are these ATMOS&HERE pants. If you’re really looking to flex your khaki muscles, then these Jac+ Jack pants are calling your name.
