How To

The Ultimate Guide To Getting Dressed With Thalea Michos-Vellis

Stylist, Melbourne

“Hello COH, My name is Thalea! I am a fashion stylist and fashion collector. I am a third generation Australian-Greek living in Melbourne’s North with two cats and a collection of archival fashion magazines.

“I am 100% influenced by my surroundings. During my (very) formative years—that time just after high school and before you realise you are an adult—I spent a bit of time going back-and-forth from Tokyo to Melbourne. I experimented with my style then and was finally able to have access to so much fun fashion, and pieces that I had only ever seen on the internet. I think this accompanied with the thrift shopping I did growing up really helped me work out my own way to assemble an outfit, as I was never one to buy a full look from the same current collection.

“Not as many people get dressed up here in Melbourne. I feel that because of how casual day-to-day style is here, I have incorporated lots of pattern and colour to basic silhouettes—like a fun bag or a printed shirt. We also have such a nice creative community in Melbourne, as well some awesome designers like Poms Eyewear and Maroske Peech!”

My thought process when getting dressed in the morning is...

“I don’t own a mirror at the moment, so I have truly had to change up my thought process in the mornings. At the moment, it’s mostly about colour and clashing patterns, as I can’t dwell on silhouette too much. If you think something doesn’t match, just wear it anyway—no one will pull you up on it ;).”

Thalea wears: Prada coat (SHOP SIMILAR), Maison Margiela skirt (SHOP SIMILAR) and shoes (SHOP SIMILAR)

My own personal style differs much from my work as a stylist...

“Working as a stylist allows me to delve into the fantasy of fashion and create looks you won’t see walking down the street. That is the fun part. I’m also able to get my hands on runway pieces that I otherwise won’t own (read: can’t afford) [laughs].”

I pull myself out of a style rut by...

“Putting bans on myself. I’ve had times where I don’t allow myself to wear denim. I love denim, but when I realise I’ve been rotating different pairs of Levi’s all week, I force a rule on myself.”

My first style memory is...

“The Camberwell market on a Sunday morning with my mother, sifting through racks of second-hand clothing. This was a big part of my life as I went every Sunday until the age of 15. I generally always try to buy second-hand before considering a new purchase to this day.”

A trend that will forever live in my eyes...

“A good pair of denim jeans and a worn in t-shirt is a look for the end of time. Also, the trend of buying second-hand and recycling will never go out of fashion.”

My go-to shop online is...

“eBay is a forever favourite. There’s always so many gems to be found and with the rise in popularity of sites like Vestiare Collective and The Real Real a lot of the good stuff gets looked over on eBay. Like the teal Prada leather coat I’m wearing for example… I got an absolute steal.”
