Ellen Virgona On How To Pick The Perfect Jeans

Photographer, Sydney

Can you give us the Ellen Virgona elevator pitch?
I’m a photographer, but I sometimes DJ at Freda’s and The Crix—always with my best friend Gab. We play Italian disco mainly and funk tunes that people won’t always know. I really love playing songs I know that no one will know, but will enjoy anyway.

Tell us a bit about your *signature* style…
The things that have stayed the same over the years are definitely jeans and t-shirts. I have sixteen pairs of Levi’s! I buy them all from Route 66 (where I work). My boss has this gift. He can look at someone, say, “Okay, you’re a size X, these will fit you!”, chucks you the jeans and they always fit. He just knows! What is your advice for someone looking for the perfect Levi’s? What’s your favourite cut?
Come to Route 66 [laughs]! Always go for a size smaller—if you can do them up, but they feel too tight, then go for those because they always stretch. People always say, “Oh, I want a looser pair”, then complain because a month later they’re too big for them. My favourite cut is 501’s. They’re mid-rise, not high-rise or hipster. They’re usually tight around the bum but loose on the leg, which I like. I don’t like a skinny leg.
