How To

2018 Wardrobe Bootcamp – What To Keep And Cull

“Bye, Bye, BYE.”

My mess from 2017 (and truthfully 2016) is still following me around.

Working at CHRONICLES OF HER has definitely helped me to adopt a more timeless approach to dressing, but my wardrobe still needs urgent attention…. enter the 2018 wardrobe bootcamp – CHRONICLES’ STYLE.

Believe it or not, having less clothes makes it so much easier to get ready in the morning. You can actually see what’s hanging in your wardrobe (making it easier to pair things together in your head).

A word of warning – before culling, you have to be prepared to let go of any attachment to once-loved pieces. Chances are, if you haven’t worn it in the last 5 months, you probably won’t wear it in the next 5 #truth.

There may be certain pieces that you are not quite ready to part with – and that’s ok. A little progress goes a long way.

Luckily, when it comes to editing-down your wardrobe there are LOTS of ways to go about it. I’m definitely not telling you to throw everything out the window (hello Depop and local charity bins!).

So grab a drink, put on a Spotify playlist and lets get down to business.

KEEP: Statement Shoes

A great pair of statement shoes (like these ones from Louis Vuitton) can be the solution to your daily outfit styling woes. You can literally wear the most boring outfit, pop these on and still look cute & unpredictable.

If you’re looking for a pair that won’t break the bank, this site has all the shoe candy you could ask for (and a lot of them are under $500).

CULL: Fedora Hats

Yes, there was a surge of Akubra and Fedora style hats a few years ago.

*PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT*

The surge has ended. Berets have become the hats of 2018, so get involved. This one is a good starting point.

KEEP: Checked Blazer

If you haven’t noticed already, at CHRONICLES we’re all serial blazer wearers (no shame). A blazer is (and always will be) at the top of our list of pieces every 21st century gal should own.

Whether plain black or printed, a great blazer will save you from 1000+ wardrobe meltdowns (and counting).

CULL: Denim Doubles

*REALITY CHECK* You don’t need 7 pairs of blue jeans.

Try them all on, see which ones suit you/your current style the most and throw the others out.

I suggest holding onto timeless styles, and doing away with anything that’s more trend focused (embellishments, rips, contrast pockets… you get the drift).

KEEP: Logo Tees

Logo tees just get better with age, and thanks to the resurgence of the 90s right now they’re oh so on point.

They make great layering pieces, and are often a great entry-level purchase for the more $$$ designer labels.

This one from Balenciaga x Net-A-Porter is our pick RN.

CULL: Oversized Round Sunglasses

Bigger is not always better, especially when it comes to sunglasses. I’m talking about those oversized frames reminiscent of the 2000s and Paris (Hilton).

They may have served you well; hiding your hangover and hiding from ex-boyfriends, old school friends etc., but they aren’t serving you in the style sector anymore – sorry.

Smaller shapes like these and these are the go this year.

KEEP: Jesse Kam Pants

These pants are literally my favourite child.

I have them in red, white and black, and I wear them every second day because they are just so damn comfy and easy to style.

You can hold me to this one.

CULL: Bomber Jackets

There may be some disagreement but the time of the bomber jacket is over.

It was simply overdone IMO.

I recommend updating your jacket department with these picks: here, here and here.
