How To

How to Cull Your Wardrobe (When You Don’t Have Time)

Sometimes you just have to think outside the box…

Admittedly, I’m a (self-diagnosed) hoarder of clothing. To be honest, anyone could tell that just by looking at my cupboard (which often takes form on my bedroom floor).

But even I’m aware that there comes a time when you’ve just gotta cull. It’s not an easy, quick or enjoyable task, but deep down I know that if I’ve been pushing something to the side time and time again, the odds are I won’t wear it again.

The ONLY incentive for me is that if I can make some room, that means I have more room for new things.

And (I’m speaking from experience here) when there’s less in my closet, I spend less time digging through all the ‘blah’ stuff, I can easily see what goes with what and my outfits are actually better.

The good news is you don’t have to lock yourself in your bedroom for an entire weekend to get it done if you’re short on time (or you’d rather spend it sipping margaritas with your gf’s).

I’ve found a couple of little tricks for how to cull your wardrobe that keep my closet in check – see below.

A PICTURE TELLS A THOUSAND WORDS

If you’re unsure of something when you try it on to get dressed in the morning (because it doesn’t fit right or you’re kinda over it), take pictures on your phone in the mirror (from as many angles as possible).

Look back at the photos in a couple of days, and if you’re still not feeling it, there’s a good chance it’s not serving you and it needs to go.

GET (DE)POPPIN

Then, if you decide to ditch something after looking back at the pics, you can upload it to Depop off your phone when you have a spare moment throughout the day (any little improvement is a win – it’s about baby steps).

Alternatively, send the photos to friends and see if anyone wants it.

Or better yet… see if they have anything they’re willing to swap it for that you know you’ll wear more.

GET PACKING

We’re going on holiday! Jk.

Put a large empty bag or suitcase somewhere in your room. We’re going to call this the MAYBE BABY bag.

Whenever you notice a piece that you always push to the side, pull it out and throw it the MAYBE BABY bag (don’t worry, it’s not goodbye yet).

Things that are out of sight, out of mind and not missed over the next few weeks are begging to be sold, swapped or donated to charity.

FAST TRACK

Set aside half an hour when you can to go through your wardrobe and pull out everything you haven’t worn in the last month.

Trust your impulsivity – if you have any doubts on a piece, pull it out and throw it in the MAYBE BABY bag.

IF YOU'RE STUCK ON SOMETHING...

ASK YOURSELF:
Does it suit my current style?
Is it flattering on me?
If I saw someone wearing it, would I wonder where they got it?
What are my reasons for keeping it?

OR...

Phone a friend! They won’t have the same emotional connection to the garments so they’ll be quicker at deciding whether to keep or throw.

GET ORGANISED

When you have another half an hour spare, organise what’s left in your wardrobe into categories. You’ll quickly see what you have multiples of (hello 7 white T-shirts!), and then you need to decide which pieces are worth keeping.

Put the ones you edit out into the MAYBE BABY bag. Like, do you really need 5 pairs of blue jeans?

EVERY NIGHT

Photograph and list two things on Depop (this will seriously take you 10 mins).

If finding time for shipping things is your worry, you could look into finding someone on Airtasker to do it for you for a flat fee (all you have to do is drop off the MAYBE BABY bag and share the postal details).

Then, adopt the ‘add one, throw one out’ method where every time you buy something, you must throw one thing out.
