How To

How To Actually Feel Beautiful (Inside & Out!)

18 tips to help us remember we got the power.

Like everyone else, I know what ‘low’ feels like.

Some mornings I wake up feeling gross/sad/sick, but this is a part of life and we wouldn’t be human if we hadn’t experienced lows from time to time.

And, of course, there are the things I’ve said and done that I wish I could take back (#imactuallysorry).

On the bright side, if I didn’t know what ‘bad’ felt like how the hell could I measure ‘good’? And tbh these low moments have taught me how lucky I am.

So first things first – remember that you’re not alone and everyone (I mean EVERYONE) has bad days.

It’s in our physiological makeup to feel anxious. It’s our brain + body’s way of protecting us e.g. if you do something cringe it’ll keep replaying in your head (like the worst song ever) to remind you not to do it again.

The good news is, we all have the power and the right to be strong, confident and independent but we must remember to keep it real. The most inspiring people handle everything with grace.

Putting ‘being nice is cool’ on your Instagram bio might be a start but it isn’t really enough – with so much going on around us it’s easy to forget the basics like actually being kind to ourselves and each other.

It’s time to take control and get some self-respect ‘cus this is the ticket to being a happier, kinder and an all-around good human.

Below are 18 ways to remind us all that we were born beautiful – from everyday actions to exercises, new hobbies, podcasts and more!

Take a day away from social media

We’ve gotta remember to look up from our phones once in a while – you never know what you might be missing!

I’ve noticed a clear pattern in my negative thinking and it’s often when I’m having a scroll.

I’d use social to wake up and to wind down and in retrospect, living vicariously through the lives of OTHER people is a pretty unhealthy way to start and finish MY day.

Instead, replace it with a podcast. If you’re interested in inspirational people and you like music, you’ll love Desert Island Discs

Find a new hobby

I’ve recently started sewing, customising my old clothes and selling on Depop. It makes me feel great because I’m creating things and now I opt to stay in (sober) on a Friday so I can be up early on Saturday, plus I’m not spending (I’m earning!).

If this sounds good to you, read our tips for how to cull your wardrobe when you don’t have much time.

3

Ask yourself "if a friend said to me the things I say to myself, how long would I be friends with them for?"

… And then write down all the things you like about yourself and your family & friends.

Try listing all your achievements and the things you’ve done that you’re proud of. Sometimes you have to put pen to paper (or fingers to iPhone ‘Notes’) to think a little clearer.

If writing’s not your vibe try making a photo book. When my best friend’s mum passed away she began making scrapbooks and now I do the same – it’s an easy way to remind yourself of all the wonderful people & moments in your life.

You can get 30 free prints here.

Try this anti-anxiety exercise

If you feel anxious and you notice your thoughts spiralling in an endless pit of neggy, try this…

Look around and tell yourself 5 things you can see, 5 things you can hear, 5 things you can physically feel.

Repeat this exercise whenever you feel bad because it forces your brain to be present in the moment.

I also use the Calm app, it will fulfil all your anti-anxiety needs!

And then get active

When it comes to fitness focus on how you feel rather than how you look – it’s scary how most of us do the opposite.

Over-exercising and stressing about what you eat 24/7 can be just as unhealthy as sitting on your ass eating pizza.

I’m soo lazy and the gym is my worst nightmare so I try to walk to and from work every day. For years I said classes weren’t my thing but it’s all about finding the right class and teacher (v important). Whether it’s yoga or street dance exercise is ACTUALLY supposed to be enjoyable (and take your mind off the day’s stresses even if it’s just for an hour).

For those that live in Sydney I’d recommend Groove Therapy and Manumission Yoga.

Wake up, don't look in the mirror & leave the house without makeup

You are beautiful. Everyone is beautiful in their own way because we are UNIQUE.

You choose to focus on your imperfections (if others point them out, they’re only wasting their energy, and trying to make themselves feel better).

Allowing yourself to just be ‘you’ (imperfections and all) is so liberating. Try it every once in a while!

Schedule in time for me, myself & I

A very quick way to be happy is to remember to put yourself first. If you’re doing you there’s no one else to blame or resent and no-one to feel guilty about.

We put other’s happiness before our own because we think it will make us happy, similarly when we’re unhappy we can end up blaming other people.

The best way to respect ourselves is to realise that we control our own lives.

Take a moment every week to do something for you; go for a walk without your phone, buy yourself a treat or give yourself a facial massage.

...but remember to do things for others too!

Remember the line between self-love and selfish.

Make time for the people you love, call your family, give a friend a gift, help a stranger and sign up to volunteer – the people need you!

9

Take a step back

If you’re in trouble at work or a friend is upset with you, consider that maybe they have a reason for it. You never know what’s really going on in someone else’s life that could be impacting on their actions towards you.

Whether they have a short fuse or not, really ask yourself why they are upset, put yourself in their shoes and you just might find more resolution than conflict in your life.

10

Ask yourself at the end of the week "have I been nice?"

Sometimes it’s good to stop and remember to be self-aware (in the right way!) – we’re not talking about criticising yourself here.

Reflect on the person you are and check your moral compass.

Everyone makes mistakes but the game-changers are the ones that know how to learn from history.

Talk to strangers

Must include; Uber drivers and people that don’t seem like ‘your kind of person’.

They have lives and stories too, and you might just make their day!

Open up, relax, and let your positive energy flow when talking to strangers. You probably won’t see them again (if you do that’s great – HI FRIEND!). They have no preconceptions of you so you are free to be the true you.

Sassy isn't that cool

Know the right time to have sass, keep it light-hearted and for when you’re with BFs who know you and won’t get offended (def don’t bring it to work). Being funny doesn’t have to be at the expense of others.

If you’re feeling b*tchy try to remind yourself that nothing positive comes from talking down on others. If there’s someone you always rant about they’re probs not your friend so maybs it’s time to fill your life with something else you talk positively about!

Give LOTS of compliments

Because it makes people feel good. Mindreaders don’t exist, so be sure to let people know all the gewd stuff you think about them.

Try to look for something good in everyone, nobody’s perfect but no one is completely imperfect either.

If you don’t have time or don’t want to do something that’s actually OKAY. Better to say ‘no’ than to flake later or miss a deadline.

Remember to smile & also to cry

I’ll leave this one up to Johnny Depp…

“People cry, not because they are weak. It’s because they have been strong for too long.”

And Roald Dahl…

“If you have good thoughts they will shine out your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.”
